Michael’s Flight – Book 2 of Descendants of Earth

June 28, 2009

Michael’s Flight is due out July 15 with eXtasy Books and I was thrilled when my cover arrived on Friday night. I always get a little nervous about editing and covers. Skylar Sinclair has done most of my covers and has always done an amazing job. I give her a sketchy idea about what I want and *poof* in a matter of hours she has EXACTLY what I had in my mind. I like my cover for Jason’s Accord (Book 1 of Descendants of Earth). It’s nice. This one for Michael’s Flight though — the cover model is TOTALLY Michael LaRosa. The background completely captures the world I tried to create on Thermodon.

I get nervous because the cover is that first bit of me, my mind, that a reader sees. They have to express how I feel about the book and in a flash tell the story.

This is Michael –

Great review!

June 26, 2009

Hey all!  I had to share my newest review with you for my story, Breaking All The Rules.  Reviewer mentioned I should write more erotic stories, but… well, I enjoy writing steam, but Breaking All The Rules was my first – and last book in this genre.

4.5 SMACKS!!  Phyllis Campbell has written a very pleasurable story with lots of steamy sexual encounters and plenty of passionate arguments between Cole and Kristine. The author had a way of giving us a very descriptive plot line without ever giving away to much information at one time. There are some authors who leave their usual writing style to try the erotica field. In my opinion, not many are able to make such a transition so easily. Ms. Campbell has found her niche. I think she should continue with more books in this genre. It’s as if she created erotica or it was invented just for her. Both characters are trying to pretend to be something other than what they are. Cole believes only women want him for his money because of his ex-wife. Kristine believes the resort is a place for sex! Can the two learn to trust each other to make this affair work or will their affair end? This is a very steamy fast paced book that I believe any Phyllis Campbell fan will enjoy and I believe there will be many readers drawn to her other books as well. She’s an author you have to add to your must-read list, trust me you won’t be sorry! ~~ Tonya / Mistress Bella Reviews

BreakingAllTheRules

When temptation walks through the door, it’s time to get rid of the rulebook.

Her assignment as an investigative journalist is to get the story on a sex resort, not sleep with her servant!  But Kristine Olsen can’t stop wanting the sexy man assigned to her.  She hasn’t counted on the unexpected feelings for Cole, and especially the story she uncovers.

When Cole Hunt spots the newest guest, he knows his week will be filled with more than just paperwork to close his resort.   The blue-eyed beauty has branded him with her white-hot kisses.  She’s keeping secrets, but will giving his heart to Kristine become his downfall when his resort is exposed?

Is breaking the rules worth it?

Another Manic Wednesday or Vixen Mary Wednesday

June 24, 2009

It’s summer. What do I do in the summer? I watch the older boys who are off track. So today started at 6:30 am and no I wasn’t ready to get up yet, so I let the first two to arrive to snuggle into bed. Except Ayden (3)–he’s a pacakge deal with his older brother–likes to smack and sprawl in his sleep. Finally drifted off, then the next installment of two arrived. Time to get up.

Now we’ve had swimming lessons, played in the park. Homemade lunchables–meat, cheese and crackers, dang why didn’t I get out the wine–while they played play station. Then it was blueberry muffins, and then peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into dinosaurs. This was all before noon.

It’s now time to run through the sprinklers. Ayden (3) forgot–mom did–his swim trunks, so Nana went down to ruffle through James (3) drawer to find something. So in James’ Thomas the train pjs Ayden is running with the big boys. In another hour we’re off to see Night at the Museum 2.

I may sleep.

Then home, and the kids will be going to their homes, and James who is at the sitters, will be home since he lives here. When to write? I have no idea, but I’ve made myself a promise to write 4 books per year and I’m at the end of the 2nd. I’m hoping to be done by the end of the week. Then it’s onto book 3 and I’m still on track.

I think that’s pretty good for an old Nana!

And it starts again tomorrow. Take Care!

Michael’s Flight is about to take off

June 21, 2009

Michael’s Flight is book 2 of my Descendants of Earth series with eXtasy Books (www.extasybooks.com) and word from my publisher this week is it is due out July 15!

Book 1 is Jason’s Accord, set 500 years in the future and readers meet Michael in that story. He started out with a “bit” part and with encouragement from my Jason editor he got a bit more page time and his own story. Michael’s Flight begins just after Jason’s marriage to Miranda. Rather than brood that he lost the woman he wanted for himself, Michael takes off for a brief sourjorn, he thinks, to one of Eadron’s Moons, Littan. A space storm throws him off course and he lands on Thermodon, the home of the descendants of Earth’s Amazons.

This weekend is supposed to be being spent on my edits….

Yes it’s Wednesday

June 17, 2009

Good Morning,

I haven’t had my coffee yet, so I hope this is coherent. From now on it’s just Vixen Mary Wednesday! Since I’ve last blogged, I spent a few days in California visiting our daughter. No one bothered to tell me about the June Gloom. We left rainy Utah hoping for sun, did we get it? Well I’d say a big resounding NO except Nichole–that’s our daughter–took us to Laguna Beach on Thursday where we did manage to catch some rays.

And Bird Shit–can I say that on a public blog?

A seagull dive bombed my husband and I, starting with the top of my head down the front of my bright red tee. The rest of the day, even though we tried to clean it, I had white smears all over. Since we were an hour away from our hotel it wasn’t like I could go change. Alas, luckily that wasn’t the highlight of our trip.

We ate at some fabulous places–I’ve been watching what I eat all week before I weigh I don’t want to go into shock–the best was a in Toluca Lake. If you ever have a chance check it out. D’Cache. They have live entertainment and a little bit of everything along the food lines. The group that entertained were so good we bought their CD. Jose Garcia he’s worth checking out.

Last week I said I’d be taking a NIA class from our daugther at The Pilates Studio, however, I decided to sleep in, instead. Of course that was the day we went to the beach. Maybe that’s why I ended up with bird poop in my hair. Karma. I was on vacation, isn’t that what you do? Sleep in?

Have you ever been to Huntington Gardens? Awesome place I would recommend it also. The weather, being the gloom that it was, actually made the day better. It was just the right tempreture to spend the day wandering around the plants and other treasures.

Other than the long drive there and back I’ve pretty much summed up my California trip. Except for the stop in Vegas on the way home. We were only there one night, but we saw The Blue Man Group. I had no idea what to expect, especially since we were in the ‘poncho’ rows. Third to be exact. I wore the plastic thing all night, and only once was I in danger. But mostly it was entertaining and fun. I’m not sure how to discribe it, loud, colorful, funny and… If you get a chance to see it, go!

Okay through boring you.

As all of you have probably noticed, the other vixens have supplied you with wonderful excerpts and blurbs, and I’m giving you boring stories. I believe I advised you on my first blog I would post excerpts and other promotional stuff when I had a new release, and I plan to keep that promise. I’m out most times on all the loops where you can catch my blurbs and covers. But I wouldn’t mind, if you’re curious that is, if you take a trip to my web site and checked out all the blurbs, excerpts, trailers and contests I have going on there. http://www.marymartinez.com

And if you have checked our chat schedule the Vixens have a chat scheduled for this Saturday at Novel Sisterhood, come by and visit.

Talk to you next Vixen Mary Wednesday!

Her Eyes and the Importance of Being an Organ Donor

June 14, 2009

In the fall of 2005 my friend, critique partner and fellow author Jennifer Cloud and I heard the story of the woman in France with the first face transplant. We were both intrigued by the news and I commented to Jennifer it would be a great starting point for one of her thrillers where someone evil finds their way in. She commented it sounded more like one of my sweet romances where the couple gets a second chance at love. Bit by bit we went back and forth and ended up writing Her Eyes. It has a face transplant, a walk in, suspense, some humor and, of course for me, romance.

Through doing the research on transplant surgeries I came across information I hadn’t been aware of. Like many people I thought that if you were an organ donor you could help 4, maybe 5 people. In an interview with the Marin county coroner I learned one donor can actually help upwards of 29-30 people. It is an amazing gift. There were some other facts that came to my attention including:

* Almost 100,000 men, women and children currently need life-saving organ transplants.

* Every 12 minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.

* An average of 18 people die each day from the lack of available organs for transplant.

* 90% of Americans say they support donation, but only 30% know the essential steps to take to be a donor.

And came across some great links on organ donation:

www.organtransplants.org
www.shareyourlife.org
www.organdonor.gov
www.saturn.com/donorday
www.transplants.org

While signing up to be a donor may not reconnect you with true love, it is an amazing gift.

In Her Eyes we ask two questions: When you look into her eyes, what do you see?

and

Would you transcend death to be with the one you love?

Another exciting post from Tracy L. Ranson!

June 14, 2009

Before I go any further, I must apologize because I’m doing this without contacts or glasses with my nose pressed against the screen. I’ve got exciting news I’d love to share and I couldn’t wait to put on eyewear. VIKING SEDUCTION and THE WARLORD’S WOMAN are bestsellers at All Romance Ebooks! I’m so excited by this news!!! I had to literally be picked up off the floor! These are re-releases of previous books withextensive edting and added heat level. Also one of my works in progress has been requested by a major literary agent and needless to say, I’m over the moon with that. As you can see, it’s all slowly coming together.

VIKING SEDUCTION

I’ve got a lot more stories coming, including DANGEROUS TEMPTATION,  coming soon from Vintage Romance Publishing! I’m going to be doing some exciting articles on different subjects so keep checking back to see what all the Vivacious Vixens are  up to!

Something exciting just happened!!!

June 12, 2009

No, I didn’t get a contract from a big publisher, nor did I get an agent telling me she MUST have me. (only in my dreams) But I did hear from an agent today. A couple of months ago, I’d sent her the first three chapters of my Regency – The Sweetest Temptation. She’d rejected it right away, telling me she didn’t like the first scene because she thought it wasn’t necessary, and the scene made my hero look bad. She also told me I did a lot of over-writing – something I didn’t know about. So, I took the agent’s suggestions and ripped out the first scene and made sure I didn’t repeat anything. Then I emailed her again and told her I took her suggestions, and would she take another look at it. I heard back from her today.

Before I tell you what she said, I want to back up a little in time. When I first started writing historicals (especially Regency & Victorians), I was afraid I didn’t have the ‘voice’ that it takes to write compelling believable historicals. But I loved to write, so I did it anyway. lol In one of my first historical critique groups, one of my partners told me that maybe I’d better stick to my contemporary stories because that’s where my voice was. AUGH! Let me tell you, that was a slap in the face. For someone who loves to write historicals like I do, that really hurt! But I ignored her comment when my first couple of historicals were published (My Heart Belongs To You AND My Knight, My Rogue – both out of print) and wouldn’t you know…my historicals were getting 5-star reviews and Recommended Reads. Not only that, they were best-sellers!! But still, I knew I was no Georgette Heyer when it came to writing Regencies. Lately, however, I’ve been trying really hard to make my historicals sound more like the classical historical romances.

Okay, now back to the agent’s email. So today I get this email. Here is what is said:
Thank you for giving me another chance to review your material. You definitely have a neat concept here, but I don’t think I’m the right agent for you. I tend to like my historicals with a modern bent, like contemporary dialogue, and this feels more classically historical. I wish you the best in finding the right fit!

WOOO-WEEEE!!!! I finally reached my goal in writing more like a true, classical historical. Although I’m disappointed she doesn’t think big publishers like – and still publish – these stories (because believe me, they do!), I’m thrilled she thinks I have a classical historical voice.

And speaking of historical romances…Don’t forget my Victorian, Love Comes Blindly comes out July 1st from Champagne Books!!!

Love Comes Blindly

If love isn’t blind to past indiscretions, can absence truly make the heart grow fonder?

Lord Gregory Fielding has been wounded when he travels to Scotland to find the next big story for his London newspaper. Now blinded, he relies on the soft, comforting touch of one of the nurses at St. Mary’s Abbey. He thinks she’s a novice, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting to make her sigh in passion.

Madeline O’Neil cannot believe her misfortune. The man she had almost married three years ago is back in her life. Gregg doesn’t know who she is and she doesn’t dare tell him. Not until she makes him like the new Madeline. But as each day passes and her heart grows fonder, she fears he’ll hate her for certain once his eyesight returns. Especially when he discovers the secret she’s been keeping from him for three years…

Comment I received today on Indentured Bride

June 12, 2009

I had a reader come up to me from out of the blue today and tell me she had started Indentured Bride yesterday and instead of taking her nap on the train home she read it and more than that, she was up half the night reading it, unable to put the book down. What really made me feel so good was when she asked about book 2, Mistaken Bride — which is currently looking for a good home. It’s the first time a reader told me one of my books kept her up all night!
